In the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 3, around 1:12 a.m., police responded to a residence in Mount Kisco on Maple Avenue after receiving a report from a caller that their roommate had fallen and injured his hand before becoming upset and leaving the apartment, according to the Westchester County Police Department.
Officers were then able to locate the man at a bridge on Lieto Drive, where he had climbed over a railing and was threatening to jump onto the Metro-North railroad tracks below.
The officers then sprang into action to talk the distraught man down from the bridge and were eventually able to calm him down, win his trust, and get him to come back to safety.
He was then taken to Northern Westchester Hospital Center with the help of the Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Police gave an escort to the ambulance as it traveled to the hospital.
The police officers who responded to the scene were praised by the department on social media.
"While most of us were fast asleep, Officers Restbergs and Flores were helping a person in crisis and saving a life. We applaud them for their compassionate and skillful handling of this challenging incident," the department said in the post.
